Satellite Dish Sign

My neighbor was getting rid of their old dish and I saw the size and smooth finish and thought it would be easy to make a big old sign for someone to hang outside. I had everything on hand, so it was a very inexpensive project.

Cleaning the dish

I washed it down with Awesome from the Dollar Tree. This stuff really is awesome if you haven’t tried it!

Painting it

I thought this color of spray paint would be a good color since it’s going outside.

I ended up giving it 3 light coats of the spray paint just to make sure I covered everything.

The color looks darker but only because of the lighting. See those 4 small holes and one larger one at the top? Well, the larger one was for hanging it. The smaller ones posed a bit of a problem. Since I was going with a country theme, I decided to fill those in the a knot of rope to tie things together.

The Design

I went to my trusted Cricut Design Space and came up with this. There were so many ideas that now I’m on the look out for more satellite dishes that people want to toss!

The Beginning

I always get so nervous when I’m putting a curved design on a surface. The one good thing was this particular font I chose made it easy to place since it was not straight itself. I stated with the middle word “Chicks” and placed it first. Then added the other two words on either side. The main thing I kept doing over and over again was measuring.

The Bottom

This font is very straight. So to center it vertically, I put a small piece of tape in the middle to use as a guide. I then measured from the ends to make sure it was the same distance horizontally and I put it down and hoped for the best. BTW I used an outdoor vinyl. You could use paint if you are more artistic than me!

The knots

Remember those 4 holes I was talking about earlier. Well, this is how they were attached on the backside.

Tada

And here it is! I just love the way it turned out. There are so many possibilities of what to put on here and ways to hang it. I can’t wait to start on another one!

I would have never thought to use the dish receiver like this. You could always call dish and direct and if they have any dishes they are getting rid of. Maybe talk to an installer in your area, he or she could drop a few off for you. You never know what a phone call or a chance of meeting am installer could yeild. Omg you can make clocks, flowers a winter scene a clever quote. So many possibilities. Just endless. Thank you for sharing this project. Many wheels are turning after reading Nd seeing this adorable craft.

Would you sell one? My daughter would love this for her barn.
