This is the combination of a soda bottle and a small liquid detergent bottle.

Cut the soda bottle

in half separating top from bottom, cut an opening in the top portion.

Slip the bottom inside the top. I had to put a vertical slit in it to make it fit (round off the corners) then mark the opening that you cut in the top onto the bottom and cut a hole in the bottom as close to identical as you can.

The hole edges will be finished with flexible soda straws. Using the flexible part of the straw to cover the curve, slit, measure, cut and fit it the top and edges. The bottom section is separate. I used more than one straw to get it right..

Cut the bottom off the detergent bottle.

It was a lot of cut and fit for the protective cover but it came out like this. You’re seeing the back side which is cut to snug up to the neck of the soda bottle.

This is the front that will set over the hole.

After all the fitting and tweaking is done paint it. I used acrylic patio paints. Then line up the holes that you cut and glue the straws over the edge. I used hot glue.

The perch on the rain cover is two straws, one is slit and slipped into the other to make it stronger. Staple it so it is tipped slightly upwards or it will be too close to the house.

With a pointy knife I drilled holes in the plastic and added 2 twist ties to hold it to the neck of the Soda bottle. Hot glue keeps it in place.

I put a hole in the bottle cap (also with the knife) and slipped wire through it for the hanger.

The profile looks a little funky but the cover will be a great rain shield.

Suggested materials:
  • Soda bottle, detergent bottle, twist ties, hot glue, pointed knife   (Had it laying around the house.)
  • Stapler, arylic patio paints, clear seal spray paint
