How do you get a French look in your garden?

One way that guarantees to take your garden from a beautiful collection of plants without a defined style to a French-inspired style is to use plants like those grown in France ...

... and to plant them in garden urns with classic French design.

French Garden Urns For Home Gardens
After searching for several months for an affordable French garden urn into which to transplant topiaries, I found what I was looking for this spring.

Urns that would exclaim, "French Style."
  • Footed pedestal
  • Medallion or scroll in the design
  • White or off-white or cream color

Pom-Pom Topiary in Large French Garden Urn
Topiaries in containers add beautiful greenery to decks and porches AND create French style to your garden.

Small French Garden Urn With Live Boxwood
Boxwood plants can be trained into balls for the distinctive French-style look of a sculpted garden. Start with a small plant in nutrient-rich soil in an urn. Add liquid fertilizer periodically following the fertilizer package directions. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch.

Shape the plant into ball shape beginning when it is still small. Snipping small stems will encourage dense growth. If you wait until the plant is larger, then the branches will not have as many secondary stems.

French Lavender In French Garden Urn
Is any French garden complete without lavender?

If your soil and winter temperatures have made you think in the past that you could not grow lavender, try planting it in French garden urns on your deck or sunny porch.

Overwinter the plants in a greenhouse or shed for protection. Or treat the plant as an annual. Discard the plant at the end of the season, and plant new ones next spring.
