Does this need to be soldered?

Basically my smart lock (schlage) stopped working because the black cable got pulled (see picture) from the battery unit. I've never done soldering, but is that what is required here to fix this?

Yes, that black wire needs to be resoldered. Soldering is not difficult but you will need to practice on scrap wire a few times until you are comfortable doing it. An inexpensive soldering set is about $10 - 15 on line. I don’t have to solder often but some repairs call for it. There are a lot of videos on YouTube.

i don’t know what a locksmith would charge but it would be done correctly and quickly. Most electronics shops can do it also.

I would contact Schlage and ask them how to fix or they may even replace that piece or the lock. They usually have a long warranty on them.

Yes it does need to be soldered. You can buy a cheap soldering iron at Harbor Frieght, or any Homecenter. Some rosin core solder for electrical connections. Plug the soldering iron in and wait till it heats up. Once heated tap the tip with the solder. It's called "tinning". Strip a 1/4" insulation off the wire. Heat the wire with the iron and tap it with the solder "tinning" it. Now it gets tricky. You have to lean the stripped wire on the the circle connector. Heat the circle with soldering iron not the wire. The wire will get hot. Then apply the solder to the wire. The solder should flow. If it does not flow it's not hot enough. Make sure it flows and does not bead up or it's a "cold joint" and not a good connection. If the solder does bead up hit it with the iron to make it flow. Let it cool and your done.

Another option is to find a 9V battery connector from some old battery appliance or toy. Cut the wires a decent length. Cut the connector from the smart lock leaving a decent wire length. Strip 1/4" insulation off the smart lock wires and the found battery connector. Twist the wires from the connector and smart lock together. Black to black, red to red. Used some electrical tape around the twisted wires to seal them.
