A neighbour gave me a set of metal lanterns. I thought they were cute so I gave them a little spring inspired makeover.

After

This is how they looked originally. A little dark and drab for my taste.

Before

I wanted to paint the brown metal and thought it would be easier if I removed the glass inserts. Turns out they were quite easy to remove, using a flathead screwdriver to bend the tabs back that held them in place.

Removing the glass

Then I washed everything in the sink, using dawn dish soap.

Cleaned and ready...

Since these would be outside, I decided to use Rustoleum spray paint. I wanted them to be bright and fun and chose a beautiful shade of blue called ‘ocean mist’ x two coats.

Blue paint

Once dry, I did a light mist of white paint. This was just to add a little dimension and overall softness.

White paint

Then I re-inserted the glass panels.

Reassembly

The final step was to paint the little hangers gold to tie in with the amber glass panels. I painted them with a little artist’s brush.

I added remote controlled candles…and done!

I think they look a lot more fun than the original brown-on-brown.  Can’t wait for the weather to warm up so I can sit outside on the porch!

Wish I had your neighbor too. These turned out really beautiful. I love remote candles, otherwise can make something fun into a small chore to turn on and off.

Thank you! And I toally agree about remote candles. I have some that do not have remote and I might switch them on once a year. Too lazy. LOL
