What animals do you have trouble with? For rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks, I spread cayenne pepper powder and shredded Irish Spring soap. I also if I have continued problems, put a mouse trap baited with peanut butter near the problem areas and the snap scares them away from that area for a while. The trap is too small to catch them, just scares them. I also try to keep the squirrels and chipmunks well fed in the front yard, well away from the veggies, they also have all the bird seed that the birds drop under the bird feeders. I don't have a problem with any bigger critters and our chow-chow loves chasing the mole/voles, whichever they are and catching them and leaving them on the patio for us to get rid of.

I read that you can buy Irish Spring soap, make shavings out of it and put it around the base of plants. The odor is supposed to discourage animals.
