Here two references to Hedge Apples (Osage Orange) that I found among the many sites Google came up with: https://www.thriftyfun.com/tf36142772.tip.html AND http://www.gpnc.org/osage.htm

I think you will find that it is not food for anything. The tree itself does have uses. Most research shows that while there is at least one compound in the apple that would be harmful to insects and the like there is no scientific proof that it helps in the apple form. That is okay, because if it works for you it works. I was raised in the country of WV and not until a few years ago (I am over 60) I had never heard of them. There seems to be one animal that likes them, squirrels, and of course they make a mess of them in people's yard. Because of the thorns on the tree most people don't have them in their yards, particularly if they have small children. I am glad you asked this question because I have enjoyed reading about them.

Yes they are good to put in the basement or hide any place spiders like to live. you will not have any spiders and the Osage orange will dry up to be replaced next year. An old timer told me about this and it works. Set the orange on a plastic lid or something as it will leave a mark on where it sets.
