Anyone know a squirrel deterrent?

Linda

Help, my yard is overrun with squirrels. They chew on everything, the doormat, the deck, fence posts and boards. We just bought a wooden shed and I know they will chew it to bits too. Does anyone know how to convince them to move away?

@Colimbia1 Wish I could help, we have a lot of squirrels also, although they weren't destructive, they did run all over our deck. They seemed to go down in numbers when we removed several trees close to house. Good luck!

@Linda not too much you can do. We have less now that we have a dog, she likes to chase them so they are weary to be in the yard too long. Perhaps this site can help you further - http://howtostopsquirrels.com/squirrels-garden/

I read some where that if you sprinkle "RED PEPPER" flakes around the area that the squirrels seem to be running around, it's suppose to keep them away. We have not tried this, so can' say for sure that it will work. But, do know that the flakes will not harm them, so at least give it a try!!!

@Linda By the way, my niece asked the same question last Sunday. She is having the same issues here in Kansas and I told her I'd done some research about the "red pepper flakes" and she's going to try it!! She is such a "wonderful gardener" and her "flowers" are exquisite to say the least!! Sure hope it helps you & her get rid of those "little rascals"!!! ~~ Have a great day!! :)

You can purchase these pellets at Lowe's or Home Depot specifically for squirrels to keep them out of your yard, off your fence, etc. Also, try hangling owls around your yard. Never used the owl thing, but heard it works.

The biggest problem is that squirrels are territorial. If you manage to get this bunch to more out, another bunch will move in behind them. I vote for a cat or dog also.

I have a Jack Russell terrier. Believe me, there are no squirrels (or rabbits or possums) in my yard!

Throw them some peanuts and they will love you and leave everything else alone...

Agree with Goree. They are hungry. Had a lot of raccoons in my hood at one time. People complained of damage. I set out cat food for them and had no problems.

A gun is the only way. You may try a humane trap but they are so smart they may figure out how to disable a trap. LOL I read a book written by an Englishman telling all of the ways, some quite sophisticated that he should have found a way to feed the birds. After a few years and all the ways he tried to keep them from the food he gave up. They always found a way around his contraptions The book also said that the gray squirrel is not native to England, rather it was introduced by humans. Sad.

My mother had squirrels in her attic that chewed through thousands of dollars worth of wiring. Squirrels got into the engine compartment of my husband's car while parked at work and chewed up the car's wiring. Destructive little buggers! The solution that worked in both instances was red fox urine. You can get a bottle at a farm store. Put a few drops on a cotton ball. Put the cotton ball in a small, sealed container and poke some holes in the lid. We used 35mm film canisters. Yeah, that was a long time ago. Be creative. Anyway, this stuff smells terrible! Don't get any on your hands. My mother just tossed a few into her attic. We put one in the engine compartment. No more problems. Hope this helps. You have my heartfelt sympathy.

Get a Dog! I have a Lassie Girl with doggie door access outside and she keeps the yard safe all day and night long.

I agree with the dogs and cats theorists. Board your neighbor's and friend's pets in your yard for a week. PlanB: Catch and release traps. Once you have trapped one, you have to take them at least one mile away. City parks are a good destination. Good luck.
