Something is eating my perennial hibiscus plants, leaving the leaves.

Robin Greulich on May 30, 2015Add a few drops of dish washing liquid to a quart of water & spray the leaves top & underside too. Sprinkle coffee grounds around the perimeter of the plant also.Helpful Reply

Robin Greulich on May 30, 2015It could be slugs or aphids. Soapy water is for aphids & coffee grounds for slugs. The coffee grounds also act as fertilizer.Helpful Reply

Duv310660 on May 31, 2015mmmmmmmm... aphids have sucking mouth parts - I don't believe they eat leaves. Fortunately, dilute soapy water works for a lot of things. Rinse your plant off after treating for a few minutes. Slugs have a distinctive pattern of damage, and it isn't the 'lacey leaf" you describe. I would recommend inspecting the plant closely, and taking a leaf and anything else you find to a local nursery for I.D.. Then, use ashes (fireplace, etc) as a barrier (tho if a flying pest, this will not help much).Helpful Reply

Keith Widgington on Jun 02, 2015You should try and examine the leaves closely especially the underside, use a magnifying glass if you have too. The soapy water may do the trick add a bit of oil to the mix and spray in early morning before the sun gets too strong. Due to the fact that the leaves are being eaten you may have the beginnings of a caterpillar invasion. Spray the soapy liquid in the ground around the plant as well..good luck.Helpful Reply

Lois Testerman on Jun 05, 2015rabbitsunlimited you are correct. I live in Eastern NC and the Japanese Beetles are eating the leaves of our Hibiscus making the lace like pattern. My Hubby sprayed it with insect killer. They are gone now.Helpful Reply
