How do I keep chipmunks and squirrel's away from my tomato plants?

Last year they ate the tomatoes before they had a chance to turn red!

In my experience only netting works.
Ruth, they do make nets for covering your plants to keep birds and squirrels away. I've seen them at any hardware or garden stores.
