What can I do about fleas ?

Not sure if this is the place to ask. I recently got out of the hospital. Unfortunately I discovered fleas everywhere. Any natural remedy or quick kill on the beds and sofa. I’d rather not use the “ flea bombs”.

  • Oh no! Sorry you were in the hospital. Hope you are on the mend. Unfortunately all you can o is clean clean znd clean some more. Vacuum every single day and change the bag or dump the canister after every use or you will just be spreading them around. You also need to bath all your pets too.

First vacuum everywhere, and take the bag or container outside and dispose of.

You can buy some 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax at the supermarket in the laundry soap isle. Then take a jar and poke lots of holes in the lid to make a shaker bottle.

Sprinkle on the bed, carpets etc. and leave on for 3 hours, then vacuum up. You will need to repeat in 9 days, the time it takes any eggs to hatch.

You can also use a carpet cleaner with an upholstry tool and use Zep carpet cleaner that is for pets.

I also have flea traps in my rooms ..... https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=flea+traps they do work, I've used them for years, they are attracted to the light, and then get stuck on the sticky pads. They also catch small creeping spiders, moths etc.

I also spray my bed with a non-toxic insect repellant that is made from lemongrass oil, cedar oil and citronella.... https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_15?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=greenerways+insect+repellent&sprefix=greenerways+ins%2Caps%2C199&crid=12HKRXBXCRIRB&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Agreenerways+insect+repellent

Then I have a kitty pad, which I shake out every day or two outside.

Hi Cathy. I'm Cindy. An easy way to get rid of fleas in your home is to put a dish in the middle of every room in your house. Fill it with warm water and a cap full of dish soap. Place a tea light candle in the water. The fleas are attracted to the light. Once they land in the water they can't get back out because of the dish soap. You may have to repeat for 3 or 4 days to get rid of all of them. Or even longer for bad infestations. You should give your pets flea baths at the same time. Best of luck to you Cathy. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Another natural, non toxic remedy is diatomaceous earth. It has less health issues than borax. Use food grade and sprinkle in your carpet, under furniture, in pet bedding. More info here. http://www.thebugsquad.com/fleas/diatomaceous-earth-fleas/

There are some cities/towns that are notorious for flea infestations and I happened to live in one of them and my husband's dog and I suffered from them until I found out about beneficial nematodes (BN), I know you're going to say "this is for outside use" but this is where you need to start. I bought a container of the BN and dispensed them around the house, washed the dog in flea dip. In less than a week the dog and I stopped getting flea bit and never had a problem after. It was the beneficial nematodes that saved us and you can order them online, I first bought them at a pet store, but because of their shelf life I started ordering them through ARBICO.
