Is there a sure-fire way to get rid of Creeping Charley?
Sprinkle approximately one cup of baking soda on the inside of the trash bin. Place a lid over the bin and leave the bin covered overnight. The baking soda absorbs any leftover odors that attracted the flies. I have also used ammonia to clean my cans and let some stay in the bottom of the can to repel bugs
They're bad this year! Take a 2 liter pop bottle, cut off the top 1/4 of it, pour in some yeast and sugar, add some warm water, then invert the top into the rest of the bottle, staple it on. Catches a lot of flies, it's gross!
After cleaning out mine, they still persisted. So I hung a bar of Irish Spring in a mesh bag on either side and they are gone. I was shocked!

I agree with Becky, they are really bad this year.
We have a problem with this because the team of garbage truck helpers are really rough on whatever trashcan we buy and put out, nothing is safe, it has to come back busted up. They delight in beating the hinges to shreds on any lidded plastic container. The ones where you place the lid on top has to go sailing and the set down is a crash scene, the bottom is now cracked out. Wheels are on the trash cans so at least 1 can be broken off. So, it is near impossible to keep the flies out.
What we have done to help remedy this is try to produce very little garbage and seal up bags tightly. Will try some of the suggestions given by other Hometalkers.

Just combine half a cup of water, half a cup of isopropyl alcohol, and a teaspoon of dish liquid and transfer to a spray bottle. Directly spray the mixture on the flies to kill them.
Hi, Don't throw food waste in them!
Wash your can out between trash pick ups and that won’t happen
