I had the same problem in the old house we just moved into. Used a squirt of Raid on a paper towel in the bottom of trash can for each change of bag. Also keep any food scraps tightly wrapped in sealed food bags and keep a tight cover on receptacle.

Nancy, fly strips work well. Fruit flies have an extremely short life cycle, so if you hang a fly strip for a week to 10 days they should all be gone

Yes! I usually make a glass of apple cider vinegar, cover it with Saran wrap and poke holes in it. Flies love the smell, go in and get trapped

Here's the method, courtesy of AGoodTired.com:

Boil 1 cup of water, remove from heat and add in 1 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of borax into the hot water.

Stir it until it's completely dissolved and then soak cotton balls in this mixture.

The cotton balls are going to be wet and sticky so place them on a small piece of tin foil or an old lid. Next, strategically place these cotton ball ant traps in all the places of your house where ants roam. Remember to re-place these traps often!
