Most likely they come into your house on the produce from the markets in the form of eggs on the produce. To get rid of them wash all fruit immediately and refrigerate, with the exception of bananas, keep at room temp after washing.
Since you have washed the pests into the drain, clean that with baking soda and white vinegar, when the fizz stops, rinse well with hot water, you may want to keep the drain covered to ensure no more go in there, they need moisture.
For the airborne ones, get a sticky cardboard from Walmart (a multipack at a great price-this is the item for catching mice) peel off the plastic cover and leave it flat, place a small piece of decaying sweet fruit to attract the gnats in the center of the pad. They will be drawn to it never to pester you again.
Hi red, we were actually talking about buffalo gnats and eye gnats, usually if you have 1 you have both, it's the worst nightmare you could ever have, get in your eyes and buffalo gnats bite, I found the eye gnats,, and sprayed with Sevin liquid 500 insects one, they were around the central air conditioner outside, the big square thing ont a concrete pad, the water drain was nice and warm, perfect place in nice green tundra flat stuff, and they were gone, the buffalo gnats started to dissapear also but hung fly catchers to get the rest, they come back but get caught again, it's a fight, but like I said the only place I've found is west of the Rockies their non-existent. Create a simple fruit fly trap using apple cider vinegar and dish soap.
Place a bottle of stale wine next to the gnat-infested area.
Mash up rotten fruits in a jar and cover the top with a plastic wrap poked with tiny holes.

I have tried many things. However, I have found the best thing they are attracted to is a SOUR BEER!!!!!! Leave some out in a shallow cup and see them swarm! You might want to use plastic wrap with poked holes too to trap them in. When they are swarming you can also spray with hairspray but then you will have to start over with your trap. Good luck!

The most effective technique I've used (info from my local college extension office) is to hang a fly glue strip near the area where they are most concentrated. Because of the short lifespan, hanging it for 2 weeks will eliminate them.
