Find out what they are attracted to and remove.
If you think that the rats might be originating from a nearby uncared for, or abandoned property, then you should call your municipality office and speak with a by-law officer. The owners may be fined for attracting vermin due to how they are not taking responsibility for maintaining their property, or the city might take more drastic action.
Thank you that might be the case.
Due to vacant or poorly cared for property? Then check with your local municipality. Where I live it is semi rural (when I first moved out here it was considered a rural route), people have gardens and lots of fruit trees. I expect a certain amount of pests. If more than the typical random rat, make sure the property is tidy and don't provide food and shelter for them. No pet bowls outside with water and food.
I have seen a couple rodents for the last few months at a time. Yes. I have fruit trees and my golden retriever is getting old. She use to run the yard and chased things out. I am having my fruit trees removed. They attract the rodents also I agree. It's hard to see the trees go but I cant have rodents in my yard. Mr neighbors had their trees removed. I will call the city. Thank everyone for your help. PS. My dog lives inside, no pet food outside.
I have been able to get rid of them at our farmhouse, even when we bushhog, by using a combination of peppermint & cinnamon oil. I purchased a spray off Amazon but have seen it at Ace Hardware. It can be sprayed or saturate cotton balls. Place around and make sure to re-apply as the scent fades. They don’t like the smell. I’ve been told it can be toxic to pets.
Another option we have found effective is the sticky traps.
