I have had the same issue. I have washed the soil with dawn & vinegar. I will admit I didn’t measure but it was mixed in a gallon container. So about 1 cup any vinegar with 1 tablespoon of soap, shake a bit. I also hung fly paper for a week. It really cut down the issue

I have punched several holes in the he lid of a jar, and then put sugar and water in it. Believe it or not it was highly effective when I did it.

Fungus gnats from house plant soil easiest to buy Nematodes they are organic beneficial creatures you add to plant soil they kill all fungus gnats by killing the larve in soil. you'll never know they are even there. Here's link to buy them https://www.arbico-organics.com/product/nemattack-beneficial-nematodes-sf-steinernema-feltiae/pest-solver-guide-borers you can buy them elsewhere cheaper but they are not guaranteed to be alive as this company does. Fungus gnats are a sign of over watering houseplants, make sure they have rally good drainage, dry completely(not just a knuckle down on finger to check for for dry soil) between waterings.#1 killer of houseplants is over watering & too much care. Life cycle Fungus gnats develop through four stages: egg, larvae (fourlarval stages or instars), pupa, and adult. They produce many generations in a year. Adult females deposit 30 to 200 whitish-yellow eggs singly or in clusters in crevices or cracks on the surface of growing media, and in moist, organic debris.Fungus Gnats are much more dangerous for your plants than you might realize because their larvae feed on tender roots and adult gnats can spread fungal disease. The key to getting rid of Fungus Gnats is to disrupt their life cycle. Their life cycle is about 28 days and the adult fly lives for about 7 of those days.

I set small jar with holes in lid with cider vinegar in areas that I see many of these critters. Then check once a week washing them out and refilling with more vinegar. This really works around my cat litter boxes

I take a small shallow bowl, fill 1/2 way with red wine vinegar. Cover with plastic wrap, and poke several small holes. The gnats are attracted to the vineger, crawl through the holes, and are trapped. If you have a lot of them, you’ll have to change out the vinegar every 4-5 days.

I’ve had problems with fruit flies and vinegar in a cup covered by cling wrap with holes poked into it works well for those. Maybe they’ll work for your gnats. But I would try the nematodes first. The vinegar is smelly and spillable, though it does work.

Add a little diatomaceous earth to your plants. Safe around animals, is organic. Mine are gone.

The fruit flies come in your house on your fruit in the form of eggs, they are nearly microscopic. The conditions are right and they hatch making even more flies and laying more eggs. What you can do is wash your fruit well and store it in the refrigerator. The only fruit I would not refrigerate is bananas, they discolor.

They also hang around the drain because of moisture, to get rid of them in there, you can put some baking soda in your drain (both drains if you have a double sink), add vinegar and let it bubble up until it is done, rinse with hot water.

Finally if you want to trap them, take a disposable glass, add vinegar and a few drops of dish detergent (not dishwasher detergent), give it a stir, they will get in but not out. Discard and set it up again when necessary.

One good thing about these pests is they do not live very long, only a day or so.

I had a terrible gnat problem and the vinegar traps worked perfectly! Simply place a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and a tablespoon of sugar in a bowl and stir. Set your bowl in an area where gnats are prevalent, such as near your house plants. This took care of my problem in just a couple of days!

Hi Nan, hope this helps you out.

In a small bowl, mix a half cup of warm water plus two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of sugar, and about six drops of liquid dish soap. Gnats will be lured in by the sugary mixture, but once they dip in for a drink, the sticky dish soap will trap them.
