Once you put food out for birds it is a free for all. No matter what the package says, birds can't read. Just put the food out and enjoy all the birds of nature or do not feed at all.
All birds have interesting traits if you study them closely. Even the black birds have some identifying feathers. The red or tri-color black birds have a happy song!
We have the same problem and they seem to scare the cardinals away, but fortunately they are only around for a short time so that's a saving grace. As far as deterring them, I don't know of any way. They can be a nuisance, but if you have any blue jays they will scare the black birds away so I guess all is fair in love and war.
I used a 2x2" piece of lumber 2 feet long, drove six 3" screws through it attached it to a post and and mounted corn cobs on the screws. The black birds prefer the corn over the seed. I did this to bring the black birds, as stated, they are so interesting and I just love their conversations with each other. You can have the best of both worlds, the black birds will leave your cardinals alone and you can enjoy the black birds in another part of your yard.
Just out of curiosity - how come?
