    Have you tried Citrenella?

The best way to keep them out is to eliminate any food sources. Fruit, flowers, sugary products should all be stored in covered containers. Over watering of indoor plants will also attract them. It could take a few weeks to get rid of an infestation.

Would you consider doing a bug bomb?

My Mother used dawn soap with water in a (shallow) saucer. I rinse my fruit when I bring it home, empty recycling, trash and compost often, and am diligent about eliminating them by hand.

I did get a swarm once after buying bananas at a store I knew would bring them. I finally waited until they swarmed and bombed them with fly spray. People keep all fruit and vegtables (even bananas) in the refridgerator.

They surely are a nuisance. Recently, I took dollar store ketchup container...the one with a pointed nozzle. I trimmed the nozzle so the opening was larger. Then I put half cup of apple cider vinegar in the bottle and a squirt of Dawn. I put the top on but inverted it. I dripped a few drops of the mixture onto the top and set it near the fruit bowl on the counter. Those pesky little bugs hover around and eventually went for the bait. Haven't seen one in days!

At night, before I go to bed, I put a lighted votive candle in a shot glass and place it in a pie tin half full of water with a few drops of Dawn. I put this on my kitchen counter, turn off the lights and go to bed. In the morning I have a pie tin full of moths, millers, tiny things and gnats.

I had the same problem and what Nancy advises works . Use a narrow necked bottle and put a 1/2 cup apple vinegar with a couple drops of dawn dish liquid in it . The vinegar attracts them and the soap makes it easier to catch them . Have used this for years and it works. If you have fresh fruit in the house you will have gnats , this controls them. They like the fruit and they like sink drains, especially if there is a garbage disposal where a little waste can ferment in the drain basin.

Don't have any soil based plants in your kitchen!

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly or gnats that lands on the surface to drown.
