For the flower bed use flour or cornmeal. Around the retaining wall I would use vinegar.
Tide works good.
You can use diluted orange oil on both, but unless your garden is just over run with the ants, I would leave them alone. You can also use food grade DE in your garden. BUT, as good as DE is, you will need to replace it when it rains or gets wet. The orange oil will unfortunately have a tendency to kill plants, as it is one of the ingredients used in organic weed killer.
Borax will work as an alternative to diatomaceous earth.
Will the Borax kill the live plants too?
