try putting an owl on the house..the birds ARE a pain aren't they ?
Must be woodpeckers looking for insects. Maybe change to Composite Boards or Vinyl or hanging tiles.
I like the "OWL" idea.......Do they have a nest nearby? .call a bird specialist and ask a specialist..I would if it was my house.
We use a plastic owl that I bought on Amazon - works great!
i think i've seen those plastic owls in stores like BassPro and HomeDepot or Lowes and Ace Hardware. no shipping to pay that way.

I bought some Dollar Store Halloween scarecrows that were about 3 feet tall. I placed them in the yard close to where the birds were pecking on my house. The birds were bluejays pecking on my house. Seemed to work till it snowed.
Have you considered putting up a netting so they cannot reach the wood, you would probably have to leave it in place permanently.
If none of the above work for you, I would think of siding my house with a non-wood product.
We had cedar shaker shingles when we bought this house years ago and had them taken off and vinyl sided. Considered it dangerous in the event of fire.
