How can we get rid of moles in our yard?

We feed the birds and the seed that drops from the feeder even with a seed catcher, attracts the moles as it is a good food source for them. It is not an option to quit feeding birds. icon

We have use poison peanuts in the past but when it is warmer out , they will not eat them. We bought Juicy Fruit gum at the Dollar Tree and chopped it up and made a hole in an active run and dumped it in, in several spots and within two weeks we saw no more active runs. We pushed the trails down and they did not return!

Everyone on the west side of my neighborhood has moles. They are so bad that it is difficult to even mow. Thanks for the suggestion and I will definitely try it. I know they do not like spearmint and neither do moles. Just a thought if anyone has the mice problem. Living in farm country is definitely a mouse/rat problem even in town.

As to the mouse problem, we put cheese whiz on the traps as they cannot just grab it and run. We do catch more that way.

We have tons of grass snakes and feral cats in our neighborhood. And still the moles rule our yards

I have had grass snakes come up from nearby ravine to bask in the sun and no longer see any moles around..........seems to work here. Snakes discovered this food source and seems to keep them coming.

It might be an option to stop feeding birds as feeders attract rats and I didn't know that rats love to eat dog poop until we had problems because of new sewer/water main installation in the area; and, all the rats ran through our neighborhood from as far as one-half mile away. Baltimore County MD advised us to take feeders down and keep our yards clear of pet droppings because of the rats. I had to take down a feeder and a Purple Martin hotel.

Moles do not eat bird seed. They eat grubs and worms. Sounds like you have chipmunks raiding your feeder and the droppings. Unfortunately, chipmunks can do as much damage as moles. Try using a mouse and rat poison. Just sprinkle it around your houses foundation and under your bird feeder and that should take care of it. Just make sure not to put it where your pets could get to it and use rubber gloves for your protection.

Moles eat grubs. Get rid of the grubs and the moles will move out. We had them for several years until I learned that little tip.

I have learned so much here! Will try grub killer. Will also try the juicy fruit gum trick. Snakes - I can't stand them. We also use poison around the perimeter of the house and will try that under the bird feeders. Just can't bring myself to stop feeding the birds as it is so much fun and entertainment. The birds come back year after year and some stay the winter!

  • Castor oil or a windmill or whirligigs - they hate vibrations

  • I hear ya on feeding the birds! I feed the birds, then feed the mice-- well, not really food per se, you get me drift - between the spaces in the boards on the deck so our dogs, cats or the birds cat get to "it" just the mice.

  • Found a few more ideas, not sure if you've tried them yet hopeful something will help.

Dip an ear of corn in roofing tar and place it in one of their tunnels. Moles hate the smell of tar, and you’ll block their escape.

Try sprinkling powdered red pepper in their tunnel entrances.

Sprinkle coffee grounds on the soil to keep moles from tunneling.

Sprinkling dried blood, tobacco or a similar repellent on the ground is effective. Remember to re-apply after a rain.
