Try incesticides- or DIY versions with vinegar to keep the critters away!
This sounds like black flies. There lifespan is about 3 weeks. They emerge mid May and die off after the spring creek run-off has ended. Try wearing light coloured, high neck, long sleeve and pants with the rubber bands at the end of the arms and the leg end tucked into socks. Clear away low hanging leaves and long grasses where they rest till they fly again. They are most active in the morning, late afternoon and on warm, overcast days. This season with all the rain we have had the creek beds and rivers that hold their larvae may be a little longer in drying up extending the black fly season by a couple weeks. They will eventually go away, bug repellant with DEET will help to keep them critters off you. Although some folks have a problem with DEET. Good luck !
