How do I get rid of and prevent Nutgrass? It seems to grow overnight.

This light green easy to pull weed took over my Mondo grass this summer. I could not keep up with pulling it. Any ideas on preventing it for next year?

Laura, put an old carpet or a garden carpet from dollar tree, over any weeds or vines. Keeping it in the dark will dry it up and suffocate it
