I have read somewhere to put crushed egg shells around your plants. I don’t want to sound cruel but the egg shells will rip the slugs little bodies if they go on the shells.

Your hostas will recover. Get rid of slugs by placing shallow containers of beer near the plants. The slugs are drawn to the beer and they will drown in it. You can also placed crushed egg shells around the plants to repel the slugs. It won't kill them, but they don't like the sharpness of the shells.

Spread copper pennies or copper mesh around the base of the hostas (completely surrounded for a couple of inches actually touching the base). The snails and slugs will stay far away! I prefer this method to trapping because some always inevitably get past the traps and it's simple. Copper gives a nice sting to slugs and snails, so none will get past your barrier.
