I assume you mean squirrels. Try spraying the area they chew with a mixture of hot sauce and water. Will need to be renewed for a while, but they may learn to stay away from the cover.

Hmm. An earlier question was about squirrels eating the garden. How about feeding the squirrels outside of your yard area? Dried corn cobs, raw peanuts, etc.-their own little get together/restaurant place....put BBQ cover in the garage when not using. Buy a shower curtain liner and drape it over the BBQ.

Paint some diluted white glue with red pepper in it along the bottom?

They are an awful problem, they ruined our front porch, ate through 2 of 4 spark plug wires in our car, chewed their way into the attic, and of course trashed the garden. We were not feeding them either! Here is something you can do:

A children’s water blaster toy can be put to use, but required you to be a watch guard.

But the best way to catch squirrels unaware is with a motion-activated sprinkler (diy store) The sensor unit will detect when an animal – including cats, it can be angled to the correct height to give an unsuspecting squirrel a drenching.
