there is a mesh netting I found at Lowe's that was just for that purpose.
Tie anything shiny or glittery to some of the branches. The movement will scare the birds away.
Or plant another, and cover part so birds can still have access to part of them for food.
I hang shiney Christmas balls, and old CD's, disks hang with fishing line.
