Grease with gasoline.
Coat pole with vasoline/grease .
That would be considered a hazardous spill, don't use fuel of any kind that will have the potential to get into the soil. We use a mechanics grease gun with the grease we use on wheel bearings. It is nasty if you touch it, but it is great fun to watch the critters slide down the poles. We have our feeders on shepherds hooks.
Although I haave not tried this yet, many readers have attached a Slinky to the pole.
have you tried greasing the poles?
One of the easiest ways that I've heard of is to spray the pole with PAM or rub down the pole with any cooking oil.
Use a baffle. You can buy or DIY. Lots of ways of making them. I like the idea of using 2 liter bottles. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Any greasy or oily substance might get on the bird and would not be good. It would affect their feathers and leave them more vulnerable.
Ha Ha! Gasoline and you have a fire pole (bring out the marshmallows)! Buy stock in Vaseline (you'll need a lot)! YEP, grease your car and the pole at the same time (or have your mechanic do it)! Pam or cooking oil (on a hot day you can also fry bacon and eggs)!

A heavy gunky grease on the pole will have them make little progress, like a lube grease job on the car. Lighter weight grease, like a cooking spray will not last long.
