How do I keep pests out of my new garden without using pesticides?

I am planning on another new raised garden (I just move a week ago) with herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, squash and zucchini. The last few years I used pesticide to keep worms and pests away but the lingering odor from it turned us off from eating the vegetables. I want a flourishing garden but not the pesticides. How do I accomplish this?

You defiantly want worms! You can buy lady bugs they ear a lot of pests without them eating your veggies...

  I should have said slugs, not worms. Thank you for the advice for the ladybugs. Where can I buy them?

  i Follow a gal on IG deannacat, she has a blog called Homestead & Chill, she has a list of organic seed suppliers that offer lady bugs. Slugs are deterred with Dianthmus earth (sp?) crushed up egg shells work well but most of us don’t have as many shells needed to protect our plants.

  Any decent nursery carries lady bugs. Some places you might need to order them.
