How do I keep squirrels from playing with my flowers in my flowerboxes

Every year, I plant flowers in my windowsill flowerboxes. I've noticed in past 1-2 years, there are many more squirrels around, and they seem to like to play in my flowerboxes, eat the flowers, and leave them in a mess, day after day. What can I do to keep the squirrels away?

Try laying down cayenne pepper flakes around the planters. That should discourage them from hanging around.

My squirrels didn't like Thyme/Garlic/Cayenne mixture--Thyme seemed to be the key after trying before with cayenne

I use mothballs placed in the planters or window boxes-it has prevented squirrels from digging up my plants!!

I used mothballs too and it worked great! I have planters on my deck and the squirrels were really making a mess of them. I put mothballs in and right away they stayed away.

I had same problem with cats. Planted hot peppers with the flowers and the cats stayed away--may work on squirrels too.
