How do I plant a garden in a yard filled with annoying Bermuda grass ?

I've tried once. Dug out all the grass but the trailers kept going back in.

The only thing growing in my yard currently is Bermuda grass and clover and the evergreen bushes in the front of my house; however, it beats plain mud. I got on one of those DIY kicks designed to cut down on weed eating and pulling out the grass around the evergreen plants around my house after watching a curb appeal or lawn & garden DIY makeover program on television. Broke up the dirt, pulled what grass I could. Put down some of that weed blocking fabric that allowed water to go through.. Added top soil or mulch depending on the corners and tight locations around the house and planted flowers. Used curved layout so a riding lawnmower could be used without having to use a weed eater to edge. Worked well for almost 5 years until hubby started blowing grass clippings into the mulch area instead of away from the house. Grass sprouted wonderfully then. If you prep the area, you could always do raised garden beds with barrier fabric before adding top soil & planting. I'd do the beds no wider than 3 feet with walk areas all around them. Have also seen DIY garden bed where the fabric was put down, the soil rounded over to create a mound and plants put in. Still used the 3-4 foot wide rows with walk space between, thus making maintenance easier. One show used newspaper barrier to cut down on the weeds in the bed.

we use straw bales every year to plant okra and tomatoe. Set them on black lawn fabric or even heavy trash bags then condition them with fertilizer to compost them before you plant. Get the book "Straw Bale Gardening" at Amazon or your local library, to get all the details. Works great.

Build a raised bed garden. Put a heavy layer of cardboard as the base and line the sides with heavy plastic barrier. You can also build one on legs.

As mentioned above you can let mother nature kill the grass with any of those mulching ideas. Then you can put a good edging around the bed that goes down deeper than the runners.
