Squirrels are digging up my yard. What can I put down to keep them from destroying my yard?

Put a road flare in the hole. Light it, cover the hole while it burns, and you won't see gopher or squirrels making holes for at least a year. And let me tell you.. i thought id never get rid of that. You wont hurt them. They'll just run away. Better than killing them! And let me tell you,. I tried everything.
