Plug up the holes allowing them to come in and their food source (usually water). Put poison or traps, but be sure not to do it if you have pets.

place the glue strip in the vent where you can reach it, when the rat gets stuck on ie just pull it out and throw it away...far away.

This is a multi-step solution. First, and most importantly, figure out how they are getting in and seal up the access point. You can get rid of them till the cows come home, but if you don't prevent them from getting in, it will be a non-stop process. Second, clean the vents thoroughly and then put peppermint essential oil soaked cotton balls in them in the event they find a new way in that you miss. Supposedly peppermint will keep them out. Third, replace the cotton balls every week if you are using the heater and at minimum, monthly when you aren't.

poison or traps! Poison often kills them of thirst and they may come out looking for water before dying. But may stay in the vent and smell decomposing! So traps may be your best answer! Tip, if you have trouble catching them with traps and they still take the bait without setting off the trap? Take a jelly bean and super glue it to where the bait goes! It’s worked like a charm catching mice at my old house where nothing else worked!

If they are in your heating vents somewhere along the line the ductwork is compromised. Either there is a separation if it's solid or if flexible duct they have have eaten their way through it. You need get them out of the ductwork and seal any openings. If the ductwork is flexible and they have eaten through it replace it with solid metal ducts. Good luck.
