If you can find the nest you can pour boiling water directly into the nest. You may have to do this several times.

What kind of birds do you have? I find my chickens are great at natural pest control--they'll eat anything that moves!

Pour Boiling water onto the nest. That should do it. If it doesn't - Repeat as often as necessary.

First, you need to find the nest and then destroy it. Boiling water usually works.

Mix 1 part boric acid with 10 parts sugar water, add this mixture to the food you want to use as bait, and set it out along any carpenter ant trails or spots you think foraging workers frequent. The sugar water in the mixture will draw the workers in, and the boric acid will kill them – and their nest.

Borax kills all of them, they carry it home and feed their babies.

I mix a teaspoon of borax (in the laundry soap area)

with some hot water and something sweet like honey or jam.

You can get Boric Acid Powder at the Dollar Store for about $2.oo and just squeeze it into the hole where they come out of. This stuff kills Roaches, Ants, and other kinds of walking bugs by 'dehydrating them' and they go back to their nests where their friends eat them and die. Sounds gross, but works really well.

Unless you get to the nest nothing is going to work and that isn't easy. My ant infestation was outside under my deck last summer. Then some came into my 2nd story bedroom. Thought the borax/sugar solution had pretty much worked - wrong! If you even have a few ants coming back they are nested somewhere. We had warm days in January (Denver) and in some marched. In looking very carefully we discovered they were deeply nested in the wood framing around my window and the window nearly fell out. Get professional help and make sure they are gone. Not worth the do-it-yourself savings I sadly found out. The carpenter ants don't eat the wood but they tear it apart nesting and weaken the structure.

Try diatomaceous earth. It is safe to animals but deadly to pests with an exo skeleton.

Contractors also frequently use borax. I would be sure to remove any old wood, standing or ground wood.... remove stumps to not give them anything to eat. I followed our exterminator around and he pointed out everything to remove.

Borax is toxic to dogs so please avoid that. I had a carpenter ant problem once and used Terro liquid bait traps which worked wonders. Track down the nest if you can.
