Cornmeal sprinkled in the mounds and surrounding area should work for you. You can also try vinegar, however you must be careful in grass areas as vinegar is acidic and can kill grass.
You can try diatomaceous earth, it's pet safe and clears ants away near instantly.
Whew, red ants are THE WORST! Try pouring boiling salt water and if that doesn't do the mounds into trash bags and tie them up tight before putting into the trash can.
