drill holes in the top of the stump and fill holes with epsom salts...this method takes a while, but the stump will rot and you can break it apart to remove it....for faster results---fill the holes with gas and light....or rent a stump grinder for a day for under $100 and remove the stump in about an hour

Dig around the roots as best as you can and put salt on them.
I use vinegar.
Chop off the off shoots and put weed killer on the cut end only, it will pull it into the roots. You may have to repeat, but eventually it will hopefully get far enough down to kill the main roots that are still alive down in the soil.
