a 22 works well. Or lay chicken wire over plantings, secure into ground and cover with light mulch to conceal wire
Sprinkle a little cyan pepper, it's not poisonous but the squirrels won't like it on the feet. Good Luck!
Throw some shelled peanuts on the perimeter of your property. Next, look up into the trees, and see which ones have nest, put peanuts there, they don't want your plants, they just want to eat. The'll also be busy hiding them for a snowy day.
I never had trouble until the spring with mine, they wanted the new shoots to eat, but that may have been the rabbits. I did the cayenne powder and shredded Irish Spring Soap.
The cayenne pepper trick really works :)
