The best thing is to purchase over the counter kit to use. Some home remedies have been putting Olive oil saturate hair put a shower cap on leave on overnight and then you have to slowly comb out the bugs and the eggs But then you end up having to do it again and 10 days

I have used mayo with success, it seemed to help get the eggs off easier and smothered the lice, didn't find one alive. Had a horrible time with the kids when they were in elementary school, some kids kept getting them back, like they were never treated the right way, so the class would get them back. My daughter was so paranoid about them that she had me check her head daily!

Get one of the head lice kits and follow the directions... AND be aware that EVERYONE in the house hold needs to be treated as well (check with your VET to see how to treat dog or cat.. Lice do not effect them but they can carry the eggs from person to person. ) as any soft surfaces such as bedding (HOT water and bleach or Lysol, HOT dryer) it is not just the lice that you need to worry about it is the eggs.... pillows tumble in a HOT dryer with tennis balls to fluff. There are commercial products to spray on couches and chairs.

Be prepared to re-treat if necessary.

Notify your kids teacher, or the babysitter... most kids bring them home from school or daycare and can be re-infected by contact.

INTERESTING NOTE: I have a friend who was a hairdresser... her kids brought home lice from school... but she never got them because she normally washed and BLOW DRIED her short hair every day... we surmised that the hot blow dryer dried out any eggs so they did not hatch.

Buy coal tar shampoo. It stinks but works. Use olive oil and massage into the effected areas afterwards. Strip all the beds and wash sheets in hot, hot water. Dust and work into the fibers of all furniture and carpets with talcum powder let sit for half hour and vacuum. You will need to keep washing the sheets and vacuuming every day for at least 7 days (you don't need to continue dusting unless you see adults). And wash hair every day with tar shampoo and massage with olive oil. Lice are so much trouble.

Put everything fabric you can in the freezer too. Pillows, stuffed toy, etc. I’ve been known to use dog flea and tick shampoo in extreme situations.
