Another way would be to dig a trench around the edges and put in a landscape timber below ground level. You can then cover it with stone. I have an awesome back yard, but my worry (after I get this deck built) is him digging and getting stuck under there. I work all day, but come home at lunch and check on him. He LOVES being outside. Put chicken wire around the open area of your deck.
Fill the holes with their poop. Yup, poop. It works.

Your dog is looking to make a den for himself, if you are leaving him out unattended in the yard,,,, I would provide him a dog run and dog house, many put them on the side of their houses or I like the back perimeter of the property hopefully where there is a tree or two. Put trellis material around bottom of deck. AND get outside toys for the dogs to play. My dog has inside and outside toys.
