How to rid Fleas ?

A friend of mine told me her dogs brought fleas into her home and asked me if I knew how to get rid of them in her home and on her pets... I told her to put them on some type of spot on treatment {such as Frontline Plus, K9 Advantix® II}, or call her vet. and clean her house very good and spray inside the home and outside, she asked me what she should use, and this is where I didn't have an answer for her... I'm hoping someone will have some ideas about the sprays she should use and why they work.

And what are your thoughts for the spot on treatments...

I never had to deal with fleas

Thanks Everyone for your time and input!!!

We use Front Line products. They are sold according to the dog's weight. Four treatments in the box. She will have to bomb her house to get rid of fleas in it. We get all of our dogs (and cats) needs from Chewy.com because they have the best prices.

My vet told me to use borax on the carpets..... I made a shake bottle from a glass jar, and poked the lid full of holes, fill your jar with 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax, and shake all over the carpet and even the furniture if bad.... won't hurt your or the pets. Leave on for 3 hours, then vacuum up, dispose of bag or container outside in trash.

Then I also use a non-toxic insecticide, Greenerways Insect Repellant made of citronella, lemongrass and cedar oils. I spray it on the bed and my cat doesn't mind it since she sleeps on bed.

Get cedar beds for the dogs.... cedar repels insects.

Lastly if they get bad, shampoo the carpet and I use Zep High Traffic Carpet shampoo thats also for pets which will kill off the flea eggs.

Fleas hatch every 9 days so you will need to repeat until you get them all every nine days. Watering outside lawn also keeps them down. And Greenerways also makes a yard spray hose attachment bottle..... I buy the stuff on Amazon.

I pooches lie on the furniture or bed, you may want to put a towel down for them to lay on, then shake out every/every other day. Wash weekly.

  • Go easy on chemical treatments and meds if the pets are older, or have other health issues.

Clean clean clean repeatedly for at least a month. Dawn dish soap works as well as the expensive chemical shampoos. Clean up the yard and I spray the perimeter of my property and base of my house once a month with plain old white vinegar. 3+ dogs, 6 cats, a canary and a dragon and no fleas.

I know this may be weird but it works !

    - Place large low bowl on floor. Fill with water & add liquid dishwashing soap. Place a light [I use the type of light a mechanic would use] over the bowl. I place mine near where the dogs like to be - I bread-top wire it to a furniture leg with the light over the water bowl [secure so will not drop into water].

    - Fleas like the bright light so jump near it into water. The soap breaks the water tension so they drop to bottom & drown. Replace water & soap as needed.

    - NO pesticide, VERY low cost, does NOT hurt environment & provides a night light to boot !

I have been using for years & works great !

there are special flea bombs. Probably can be purchased at a hardware store, or Home Depot/Lowes, or check it out online (google it) It may have to be done more than once to kill not only the fleas but their eggs as well.

wear white sox round the house. fleas will jump on the white. pick them off and drop them into a bowl with water and dish detergent. I did this to get rid of the last of the fleas and to check if there were more hatching after i had done all the bombing, vacuming and the rest.

Diacomateous (sp?) earth (food grade). Sprinkle all over everything and vac with a shop vac not a home vac it will destroy the home vac. Do this several times. You can use it on the animals also. My son did this in a house he bought that had a flea problem and no more fleas.
