I've heard Vaseline can get on bird wings making it not a good thing to use near any kind of feeder anyway. You can buy an ant trap that you hook the feeder hanger to and then hook the trap hanger to the tree branch. It's essentially a dish you fill with water. Ants can't cross the water so it works great. Small birds like finches will hold on to the trap hanger (so definitely use no Vaseline) and drink water from the dish upside down so you do need to keep the water level up (but need to change the feeder sugar solution every few days anyway since it's hot where you live. Filling the trap with water can be done at the same time) Be sure there isn't a lot of foliage near the feeder---I've read ants can jump!
I'm told they don't like peppermint- where to put it ??
