If you have grass in the garden and do not have weed block....smother it out with newspapers, cardbaoard, lay heavy professional landscape fabric, and cover with mulch

Once you get rid of the grass with a herbicide of choice, use a 3 inch layer of mulch. That should keep the grass from growing back. Happy gardening! https://www.thespruce.com/kill-grass-in-flowerbeds-1316108

Thes best I do is put down a pro quality of land scape fabric , cut an “x” thru it and plant in the x . Cover with a non grass mulch, Next year before your garden is planted, strip the sod off roots and all. Fill in with a good quality potting mix. Plant and mulch. You might get weed seeds growing, but they are easier to get the roots out

The garden is full of perennials so I am guessing getting down on my hands and knees is the way to go

  • Might have to manually pull it from gardenbed

Once you get rid of the grass, Put down Preen Weed Preventer, it is not poison, all it does is prevent germination in weed seeds and it works! Other than root born weeds that have to be removed by hand, I spend only a couple of minutes a month dealing with weeds.

Where do you buy Preen? I live in Canada and have checked the Home Depot website here and its not on it. I go to the states to shop every once in a while so if I know where to buy it, I will go there, thanks

If you get all the grass pulled out by the roots or use a grass poison like Round Up that won’t kill any broad leaf plants they say! I can say it’s not killed any of my flower bushes yet, but I do my best not to get it on my bushes too! Once you either kill it or pull it out, put Preen down. It’s a chemical that keeps weeds or anything else from germinating. You have to reapply every 3 months at least to keep canything from germinating. But it won’t stop and plants or weeds that have already germinated and growing already! Nor will it hurt any existing plants that I know of! I also recommend a good layer of bark nuggets in your flower garden that also will keep the weeds down. Plus if any weeds do appear they will be easy to pull out! I prefer bark nuggets over bark dust being the dust deteriorates too fast and the weeds grow quickly in the dust! Bark nuggets hold up a lot longer and won’t need replacing for quite a while! Another advan of the bark nuggets is they hold moisture longer and keep plants warmer in cold weather. I put 12” deep of bark nuggets in my flower garden after planting Cala lilies in the garden and they were not supposed to survive thru the winter at all! Yet mine have been coming back stronger and stronger every spring being buried deep in the bark nuggets! It took two years before the bulbs sprouted the plants up thru the deep bark nuggets though! I thought maybe they weren’t going to make it and then the third year they were coming up everywhere! Been another 7 years and there still growing great every year so far! I had to dig some up and split them they were getting so many of them!

Most all of the big box stores have Preen Weed Preventer. I have seen it at Walmart, Home Depot, Menards, and Lowe's. They have a container that is about a gallon that you just shake it out of, and they also have a larger bucket that you can refill the smaller jug with for a little easier application and also more even. I use a little more than the small jug a year with my gardens, as I apply it twice, in the spring and early fall so that the weeds don't get much of a start in the spring. I pull mostly stuff like creeping Charlie. and the tree seeds from the huge maple in my neighbors yard that sends a lot of seeds out in the spring (tree seeds aren't weeds until they germinate in the garden so Preen doesn't work on them). I hope you can find some, or if you have relatives that live in the states, have them grab some for you so at least you will know you have some until you can get some. I don't know where in Canada you live, but if you are more central, Minnesota has no sales tax on clothes or most food items.

You can get rolls of a black plastic mulch film. It comes folded about a ft wide. it openes to 4 ft wide, this might be good be between the rows, and if you're careful, you could try slipping it over the existing plants with a larger x.
