cut them as far back as you can and pour vinegar on them
Cut them off and paint full strength Round Up to the fresh cuts.
Just a funny suggestion...I had a bush in my front yard that i cut back and wanted to remove. I knew it was going to take forever to dig up bc it was still alive. So i cut it back as far as I could and put a trash can over it so it wasn't getting any sun or water other then what was soaking into the ground. I think it did the trick! But i still have to dig it up. LOL
