Ideas on how to deal with neighbors barking dogs?

The problem has become unbearable! Today is really bad. They started barking at 2 am, and at 11 am they are still at it. Neighbors behind us have three dogs, all barkers. People actually life full-time in a fifth wheel camper; not just a vacation thing. Camper is parked right at the back fence line, and right by our bedroom window. Two adults and three dogs occupy this small camper. There is an ordinance about living in a camper for more then a short period of time. Also an ordinance about barking dogs. We had hoped not to involve authorities and settle this like "neighbors". This has now gone on for almost a year, and probably longer. We've been residents for almost a year. As we learn about our property we find things that at first seemed strange. At the back corner of our house if a very bright spotlight and it's aimed at the neighbors bedroom window. Discovered that fact by accident when we were trying to identify switches in the house. Have also found that when we turn this light on in the middle of the night (when the dogs start barking) the people seem to be motivated to bring the dogs in. Would only guess that the previous owners had the same issues with the dogs. In nw AZ the weather is such that it very seldom gets too cold for the dogs; the summer heat is a different problem. But still the dogs are left out, sleeping under the camper in the heat of day. We have a beautiful backyard that we would like to enjoy but the barking makes it impossible! We've tried talking to the people, hollering at the dogs our selves, and have even considered hosing the dogs with water. It really isn't the dogs fault; they obviously don't know any better. Have even looked at electronic noise abaters that can be mounted on the house wall but a bit pricey for our budget. One of the dogs is a large shepherd, and we can hear his barking from two blocks away when out for a walk with our dog (who doesn't bark). Have always loved dogs but this has pushed us to a desperate point and some of the solutions we've considered are against the law.

I am so sorry you’re dealing with this! I have a serious barker too but I don’t leave him outside all day. You’ve lived with this long enough.

We know that many people have the same problem; maybe there are some methods that have worked for others.

Those dogs are lacking attention. That is why they bark. They need to be taken for walks daily. Tell the people if they don't start taking care of the dogs you will call authorities. Or start playing with them yourself. Are the neighbors friendly?

Neighbors not very; dogs not at all. A german shepherd, a pit bull cross, and an old unknown mix. Have never seen them taken for a walk, never real attention. And yes, they do want attention but I don't think I can help with that. Their 5-ft fence is meant to keep the dogs in but it's not a very large area.

  • Maybe check on your town's noise ordinance? That might be considered nuisance noise for the police to deal with.

Had hoped not to involve law enforcement but something has to be done. Deputy is aware that they are in violation of housing ordinance but we are at the far end of the county and nothing seems to be done about it. We aren't the only ones living with neighbors like this. There is always the fear of retaliation when you call the Sheriff's office. We shouldn't have to live like this but it's a problem every where.

I feel for you. You say there are ordinances. If you have talked to the neighbors with no results after so long it's time to get the authorities involved. Don't hose the dogs or do anything that may be against the law. The light you talk about, I would change it to a motion sensing light. Any movement at night will turn it on. Maybe your neighbors will get the message.

Message not received with the light yet, at least nothing that works for very long. We don't have to turn it on every night but quite often. Can't remember the last time we were able to sleep the night through which is probably why we are looking for help with this.

Move and find quiet surroundings, that maybe why the previous owners moved, not worth wasting you life over this, the neighbors will not change.

Problem is that's the move we made last April. Won't be in our future. Previous couple had to pass away to get away?

Then I would report them to animal control. They deserve a better life then that. Good luck. I feel sorry for the dogs.

Always feel sorry for the dogs; they deserve attention. They give us unconditional love.

Use a dog whistle - only the dogs will here it - and they don't like it.

    • Kay Kay on Jan 31, 2018

Not convenient to leap from bed several times a night to run outside and blow a whistle?

Ask the Neighbors nicely you need to have a talk, then tell them your concerns about the dogs barking. If they arent receptive that it's bothering you, and obviously the dogs are unhappy. You don't want to take the aggressive approach to start with. This will only start problems with your neighbors. You don't want that. But if they don't remedy the problem after talking it out / or trying to. Get ahold of the Athorities. Because it sounds to me like a case of neglect of the dogs.

Part of the responsibility of being a pet owner is treating animals right. If a dog is barking excessively, something is wrong. The animal is hungry, cold, lonely, afraid, etc., in other words, they are not being cared for properly by the owner.

If the dog's barking is disturbing you for unreasonable durations, or during the night, then there are bylaws to protect your privacy. Contact your municipality, or go on their website to learn what the noise by-law indicates regarding pet owners needing to take responsibility for their pets behavior. Talk to a by-law enforcement officer. They should be able to instruct you as to what you need to do, and what they can do about fining the owner for infraction of the noise by-law.
