My sweet potato plants look like lace. How can I keep the Japanese beetles from eating my plants in a way that is safe for my dog and grandchildren

sometimes I can find places online (google?) where I can find ladybugs and green lacewings which both like to eat whiteflies and aphids, if those are your main bad-boy-bugs. But you MUST NOT USE chemicals to get rid of bad bugs. Also most spiders are your friends in the garden, as they, too, eat bad bugs. (In Wyoming, the only spiders that truly scare me are black widows and brown recluse)

Use Japanese beetle traps. It took me three years to reduce the number of beetles in my yard. They work. Just be sure to place them 30ft down wind away from your plants. I used three traps for 13,000 ft yard.

I put soapy water in a bucket. Then I hand pick the beetles and put them in the soapy water and they drown.

I do as Heather. Also I found that Zinnias attract them easy to find and pick them off. Try Milky Spore treatment for the long term

Thank you for the connection to the Japanese beetles educational site, very useful. I always used to hand pick the beetles but I was hoping to avoid that. I believe I will try the neem oil.

Mix a 1/4 cup regular blue Dawn dish soap to a gallon of water to spray on whatever you want bugs off of.They don't like the smell or taste of it.Gets rid of other bugs too,not just the beetles.Good luck Rebecca.
