I use cayenne pepper powder liberally around my plants, along with a generous dose of shredded Irish Spring bar soap. I have had good luck with that. There are always the exceptional critters that defy those remedies, for them, I put a few mouse traps bailed with peanut butter by the plants that they are bothering. The snap usually scares them half to death and they stay away for a while. I have never caught a critter with the mouse traps, not even chipmunks. That is what I have trouble with in my veggie garden. I also feed my critters away from my gardens. A happy critter may stay out of the garden! I hope this helps!
