  • If they want to get in, they will find a way! Make sure you don't have any openings that they can crawl into, and that all vents are sturdy and well secured. They are very strong- they pulled one of our vents off of the soffit and crawled inside, tearing the screws right out of the wood! We screwed in a big piece of thick plywood in that area using more screws than would normally be needed and that solved the problem. Make sure you do this toward dusk, as they are nocturnal animals and leave at night to go hunt. You don't want to trap them in your attic!

If have a chimney , make sure that the screen is intact. Check your attic and eaves for openings. Don't leave out any food or fruit to entice them.

All good ideas. This site seems to have a lot of information about prevention and cures.

Use moth balls, sprigs of mint or basil. One couple I know took one of those room air fresheners that spray every so many minutes & set that up in their attic. They did this at dusk/night so the raccoons would not be in the attic, HA after they set it up & turned it on, one of the little fellers went Flying out! They sealed the attic but left the room freshener (yes, they had to clean) but never had any more problems.

If you have roof vents, make sure the screen is intact and sturdy. A raccoon tore the screen in one of my roof vents, and crawled through into the attic. Luckily, I heard him walking around up there immediately. A licensed wildlife remover had to be enlisted, at great cost. (A neighbor was away for months and ended up paying huge costs for a hazmat cleanup due to a family of raccoons and their waste in the attic.)

After repairing our vent screen, we nailed hardware screening inside the attic right under each roof vent. We also continuously prune trees away from the house. We very frequently check the attic, and we bought metal trash cans because the raccoons chew right through the plastic ones. Don't leave pet food outside, either.

Our neighbor purchased special cages to place over all the roof vents, which a roofer installed.

Make sure you have no gaps for them to enter. leave Moth balls around and cross your fingers.
