I agree with William, you can be sure not to damage the roses if you dig them out by hand with a small hand towel, that way you know you are getting the roots. Before you put down the landscape fabric, put down some Preen Weed Preventer for any weed seeds that may be in the soil. It really does work and won't harm your roses at all.

Best and safest is the old fashioned way. On your knees pulling by hand. It’s easiest after a rain but be careful not to let weed seeds fall on wet ground or they’ll sprout.
