If you want a repellent for you so that you don’t have to use commercial repellents, buy some vanilla oil. Be sure that the oil you buy is for perfumes etc. and not for candles. I was given this tip 16 years ago and in that time have not had a mosquito bite. The vanilla oil is great. Just put a few drops on your ankles, wrists, knees, and back of neck, and you’ll be protected. The only downside is that sometimes someone will say they smell cookies!

What kind of pests? A soap solution spray using a couple drops of dish soap and water in a spray bottle will help deter aphids on roses and other plants. Just make sure you spray on the underside of leaves too. They like to hide there. Sometimes if you know the kind of plants you will have in your garden in the spring, research what plants you can grow with that are beneficial. Chrysanthemum, marigolds are known to deter certain pests.
