You can mix Cayenne pepper in with the seed. It doesn't harm the birds at all.
Did you try vinegar or baking soda? maybe make a paste with baking soda and water and put where it spilled and let sit for a bit
How close are the feeders to trees or shrubs that they can leap from to get on the feeders. You could also try putting down dried ears of corn, peanuts, etc. for the squirrels to eat below the feeder to keep them happy and fed without getting into your feeders.
have you tried the slinky trick. Attach a metal slinky to the top of the pole and let it hang. When the squirrels try to climb the pole they will slide to the ground.
I have feeders on wooden pole which squirrels climbed easily so my husband installed a tube of aluminum that fits on the pole the entire length. Squirrels are not able to climb, however chipmunk can climb under the aluminum and come out the top to get to the feeder. Squirrels now enjoy the seed the birds scatter to the ground. My husband got the aluminum from a construction site, not sure where it is available, but you could try hardware store.
