Suckers at the base of our tree! How can I get rid of them?

Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to get rid of suckers at the base if our front yard tree. We cut them down as short as we can and more keep coming. It's so bad that the entire base of the tree has them.
we'll try anything!

What type/age tree? Short or tall, alone or in a stand with other like specimens? Conifer/hardwood.?

This usually means your tree is in distress and is trying to save itself. Have the roots been damaged or has the tree been girdled. Your local college may have a forestry department and you may get someone to come look at it. Good luck.

Our Judas tree used to do that when it was new. I just kept breaking the suckers off by treading on them with sturdy boots, and breaking them away from the trunk. It takes a while, but eventually they stop growing. If you cut them, they just keep growing worse than ever. It is like pruning, they get bushier. But if you break them, it deters them from growing, just like suckers that grow from below the graft on a rose bush.
